The Eiffel Tower was constructed to be a focal point for the Exposition Universelle, a fair held 100 years after the French Revolution. It was completed 15th March 1889 and open a few weeks later.

250 visitors have reached the top since it opened, around 7 million visitors a year
A conman called Victor Lustig sold the tower twice, he didn't even own it
