Barcelona Airport BCN is located south-west of the
city of Barcelona, between the city limits of El Prat
de Llobregat, Viladecans and Sant Boi. The Airport
is being served by multiple major and minor airlines,
serving not only Europe, but the Middle East, parts
of North and South Africa, Singapore, Central and
South America, Mexico and the U.S. These airlines
fly to US destinations: Iberia--to Washington-Dulles
and Boston; Delta--to Atlanta; Continental--to Newark.
Barcelona Airport has experienced
tremendous growth in the last decade--in 2008 it handled
over 30.2 million passengers. As a consequence of
this rapid growth, BCN is preparing for the future
by making major updates to its infrastructure and
services. When the long-term plan is completed, it
will transform the airport by adding a new terminal
area and extending the airfield with a new runway,
as well as undertaking other improvements. This in
turn will increase its domestic and international
connections and establish Barcelona Airport as a major
European hub.
Aside from its three commercial airline
terminals--TA, TB and TC, Barcelona Airport has also
a separate Corporate Aviation Terminal with waiting
rooms, VIP lounges and public areas situated on the
ground floor, and meeting rooms and company offices
on the upper floor. Open year-round, 24/7.
Barcelona Airport currently has 26 corporate aviation
spaces occupied by: CNAir, Gestair, Universal Jet,
Bks, Punto Fa, Corporate Jets, Bcn Jets and Executive
Airlines.
Getting to the Airport by Car:
C-31 Barcelona-Castelldefels dual carriageway is the
access road to the Airport and connects you with the
C-32 Barcelona-Sitges. From the city of Barcelona
ring roads, you can arrive by the means of the "Pata
Sur".

Barcelona
Airport Terminal Information

Introduction
The main terminal building of Barcelona
Airport holds three terminals: A, B and C. (Sometimes
marked as TA, TB and TC.)
Passengers go to an airline's designated
terminal passengers to find it's ticketing and check
in counters. Via security gates, each terminal gives
out onto a pedestrian avenue that runs the length
of the terminal buildings. As they go to their planes
passengers from all three terminals share this same
walkway, unless security restrictions are in force.
The avenue gives access to six triangle-shaped
modules, M-0, M-1, M-2, M-3, M-4 and M-5, each of
which has its own set of gates for embarkation and
disembarkation. Consequently, an airline's planes
may use a module that is a located a little distance
away from the terminal its check-in and ticketing
services use. So departing passengers should check
their boarding cards carefully to make sure they know
which gate to go to. (Occasionally, a boarding card
may not show the gate number, but instead use only
the module name, e.g. M-1).
Each terminal at Barcelona airport
has a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants. ATMs
(cash machines) are available in all terminals; full
service banking offices, which offer currency exchange
services, are available in Terminals A and B. There
is a business center in Terminal B.

General
Information
Barcelona
Airport (IATA: BCN, ICAO: LEBL), also known as El Prat,
is the main airport serving Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.
It is located 10 km (6.2 mi) southwest from the centre
of Barcelona, in El Prat de Llobregat. The
airport is the largest in Catalonia and Spain's second
largest behind Madrid Barajas Airport. It is a main
hub for Vueling Airlines and Clickair, and a focus
city for Spanair, Air Europa and Iberia Airlines.
The airport mainly serves domestic, European and North
African destinations. The airport is undergoing expansion
with the new south terminal (T1), expected to enter
service in mid 2009.
In
2008, 30,208,134 passengers used Barcelona Airport.
A slight decrease from 32,793,897 in 2007.
The
Barcelona-Madrid air shuttle service, known as the
"Pont Aeri" (in Catalan) or "Puente
Aéreo" (in Spanish), literally "Air
Bridge", is the world's busiest route, with the
highest number of flight operations (971 per week)
in 2007. The schedule has been reduced since February
2008, when a Madrid-Barcelona high-speed rail line
was opened, covering the distance in 2½ hours,
and quickly became popular.
Barcelona's
first airfield, located at el Remolar, began operations
in 1916. However, it did not have good expansion prospects
and so a new airport at El Prat opened in 1918. The
first plane was a Latécoère Salmson
300 which arrived from Toulouse. The airport was used
as a base by the Spanish Navy's Zeppelin fleet. Scheduled
commercial service began in 1927 with an Iberia service
to Madrid.
In
1948, the first overseas service was operated by Pan
American World Airways to New York City, using a Lockheed
Constellation. A new control tower was built in 1965
and the terminal was rebuilt in 1968.
The
airport underwent a major development in preparation
for the 1992 Summer Olympics with the construction
of a second terminal (designed by Ricardo Bofill).
A
plan for expansion (Plan Barcelona) includes a third
terminal building (also designed by Ricardo Bofill)
and control tower. An additional runway (07R/25L)
has been built. Once these developments are complete
in the beginning of 2009 , the airport will be capable
of handling 55 million passengers annually (compared
to 32.8 million passengers in 2007). The airport is
slated to expand in area from 8.45 to 15.33 square
kilometres (3.26 to 5.92 sq mi) by 2009. A further
expansion is planned to be finished by 2012, with
a new satellite terminal which will raise the capacity
to 70 million passengers annually.
After
maintaining a presence in the airport for over 80
years, Iberia will withdraw all of its services to
Barcelona (except Puente Aereo, Madrid-Barcelona-Madrid,
which departs and arrives every 30 minutes) in the
spring of 2008 and replace them with Clickair services,
despite Barcelona being one of the airports with more
growing potential in Europe. Instead Iberia plans
to introduce at least four new services to the Americas
by 2008/2009 as a response to the great demand. Similarly
it plans to use El Prat's new terminal for the destinations
to Asia which it hopes to establish by 2009. Although
these new routes will also leave also from Madrid,
Iberia hopes El Prat will become Spain's main gate
to Asia (the market which it does not yet have a decent
presence in), whilst Madrid focuses more on the Americas
and Africa.
