Country Information - Spain
Bail Bond: a guarantee to be lodged
with the police in the event of an accident or major
traffic violation - no longer a legal requirement
for Spain and most insurance companies have stopped
issuing them.
Children in cars: Children under 12
cannot travel in the front unless using a suitably
adapted restraint system. In the rear, passengers
under 135cm tall must use specially adapted safety
devices and restraints.
Documentation: always carry your driving
licence, vehicle registration document (V5), and certificate
of motor insurance. If your licence does not incorporate
a photograph ensure you carry your passport to validate
the licence. If the vehicle is not registered in your
name, carry a letter from the registered owner giving
you permission to drive.
Drinking and driving: Don't do it.
Over 0.05 per cent and you could face anything from
a severe fine, withdrawal of your licence, up to imprisonment.
Fines: On the spot fines are issued.
Ensure an official receipt is issued by the officer
collecting the fine.
First-aid kit is advised, but not
compulsory.
Fuel: All grades of unleaded petrol
(benzin), diesel (gasoleo 'A') and LPG are available
as well as lead substitute additive. Leaded no longer
exists. It is allowed to carry petrol in a can. Credit
and debit cards are widely accepted, although they
probably won't work at automatic pumps, which are
often the only pumps open out-of-hours and at lunch-time
(from noon to 3pm) away from the Autoroutes. It's
a good idea to let your card issuer know you will
be travelling abroad. This ensures they don't suspend
your card if they spot it being used in unfamiliar
places, which they sometimes do as an anti-fraud measure.

General
Information
Alicante
is the sixth busiest airport in Spain, and in 2008
it handled 9,578,308 passengers and over 81,095 flight
operations. Around 80% of all passenger traffic at
Alicante Airport comes from International flights,
with the passengers from the UK, Holland, Germany,
France, Italy and Sweden being amongst the highest
number of visitors.
The
Alicante El Altet Airport currently has two terminals
with the new (but temporary) Terminal 2 building having
been constructed to cope with traffic demand. There
are extensive building works for a new terminal which
are currently underway on the east side of the main
terminal. Features will include 16 telescopic runways
for passengers to walk from the departure gates to
the aircraft. The project is scheduled for completion
in 2010 and will increase the airport's operational
capacity to 20 million passengers per year.
El
Altet opened on 4 May 1967, replacing the older airdrome
La Rabassa that had served Alicante since 1936. It
took its name after the El Altet area (a part of Elche's
countryside) where it was built. The first commercial
flight that landed in the airport was Convair Metropolitan
by Aviaco. Iberia established a regular connections
Alicante-Madrid and Alicante-Barcelona since November
1969. In early 1970s passengers' traffic reached 1
million, which prompted a construction of a new passenger
terminal. In later 1970s the runway was extended to
three kilometers.
In
2007, Ryanair, the largest European low cost airline
established a base at the airport.
In
2008, the airport handled 9,578,308 passengers, making
it the sixth busiest airport by passenger numbers
in Spain, and one of the 50 busiest in Europe. The
largest number of passengers is carried by EasyJet
(1,564,611 passengers in 2008), closely followed by
Ryanair (1,415,284). Air Berlin (752.259) is the distant
third.
There
are two terminals at the airport, located one adjacent
to the other. A new terminal is under construction
and is due to be finished in 2009. A construction
of an AVE high-speed railway terminal within the airport
is under consideration
